In 2017 I discovered Zora Neale Hurston’s work for the first time. I was listening to the latest episode of the Seriously… podcast ‘A Woman Half in Shadow’.
Hearing Solange Knowles read passages of Hurston’s work was a revelation.
Sometimes I feel discriminated against but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It’s beyond me.
I think it took me until last year before I finally bought one of her books – Their Eyes Were Watching God – and her work was every bit as soul-touching as the podcast promised it would be.
If you haven’t already read something of hers please listen to that episode of Seriously… I feel certain that hearing Solange Knowles read her words will be all it takes for you to start stuffing your basket with Hurston’s books.
